I’m a serial right-hand man to entrepreneurs. Sometimes I’m called ‘Non-Executive Director’, sometimes a ‘Consultant’ or ‘Advisor’ and occasionally I’m referred to as a ‘Coach’ or ‘Mentor’.
Serial – I’ve worked with a lot of people and once we achieve what we’ve set out to achieve I tend to move on (unless there’s another interesting journey to go on)
Right-hand man – I help entrepreneurs work out where they want to be and how they’re going to get there and then we make it happen.
Entrepreneurs – The most interesting, challenging, creative, hard work people in business.
I’ve been an employee and an employer. I’ve worked in Professional Services, Retail, Finance, Technology, Recruitment, Media and Marketing industries. I’ve worked in Sales, Marketing, Finance, Operations and IT teams.
My job titles have included; Paper Boy, Shop Assistant, Gallery Assistant, Marketing Assistant, Sales Assistant, Business Support Manager, Account Manager, Business Development Manager, Consultant, Director, Non-Executive Director, Commercial Director and Chief Operating Officer. Years ago when I worked in Queensland on a banana plantation, my job title was ‘Humper’ and now I don’t have a job title at all.
I’ve worked in the public and private sectors. I’ve started businesses, closed businesses, invested in businesses, grown businesses, sold and bought businesses. I’ve been hired, made redundant, sacked, resigned, fought, shouted, got angry, punched the air in celebration, raised money, made money, lost money, laughed, cried and I wouldn’t have missed any of it.
I love business, I love people, I love helping people achieving things in business. I’m clear that the joy of it all is the journey and not the destination but I’m equally clear that without a destination a journey can be very difficult.
